SCSH 1201: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: ISSUES, PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES 

SEMESTER 1, 2022/2023 (SECTION 802)

Natural disasters happen because of human greed. Aside from humans, animals and plants also have to face the consequences of our act. I realise the importance of saving the environment after witnessing natural disasters happening in our country annually. During this time, many people lose their loved ones, belongings and home. Floods often occur during monsoon season hence everyone has been warned by the authorities to be prepared for any possibilities. However, we should expect the unexpected because there are times when the water level rises higher than we expect.

I have never experienced any natural disaster but I once joined a school trip to help clean the flood victims' houses. It’s painful to see them having to restart their life from scratch. They have nothing left except for the clothes they’re wearing. The least I could do back then was contributing my strength. Poor drainage system and poor wastewater management are said to be the causes of the natural disaster. This proves our ignorance of handling wastes.

Many ways have been implemented to save the environment. In my hometown, we have a no plastic bag’s day every weekend. So, when we go to the market, we will bring our own bags to put all the stuffs we buy. At my campus, students are encouraged to bring their own food containers and drinking bottles. Restaurants also have stopped providing plastic straws to customers as a way to reduce the usage of plastic.
